The Danish Embassy in Serbia continues to support Enhancement of Migration Response Capacities in Serbia

The Danish Embassy in Belgrade and Danish Refugee Council in Serbia signed the project document regarding Enhancement of Migration Response Capacities in Serbia on Friday, 13th of November 2015. This is to support Local Councils for Migration in updating and realisation of Local Action Plans and raise-awareness of governmental and non-governmental service provides on migration and related topics.

The signing ceremony participants were the Ambassador of Denmark in Serbia Mr. Michael-Borg Hansen, Assistant Commisioner for Reception, Accomodation and Sheltering, Return and Durable Solutions of Refugees Mr. Ivan Gerginov and Representative of Danish Refugee Council in Serbia Mrs. Marina Cremonese.

As the number of asylum seekers increased, the Republic of Serbia developed capacities necessary to provide international protection by swelling the number of employees and expanding accommodation capacities. Despite the huge efforts of the Government of Serbia to open refugee reception centres, local communities, civil society and NGOs, many humanitarian and protection needs of refugees remain unmet. This is where the Local Councils for Migration, especially those on the Balkan migration route (in 18 municipalities in Serbia, mainly border lined) need to respond more directly and efficiently in providing tailored protection assistance, adequate information share and substantial winterisation program. The project will therefore support the Government of Serbia and Local Self-governments in the realisation of Local Action Plans on migration management and in the improvement of refugees' access to information, protection mechanisms and needed reception assistance.
