The begining of works for additional 152 households in Obrenovac

The Danish Refugee Council signed grant contracts with additional 152 flood affected families of Obrenovac thanks to the savings within the project “Supporting Recovery of Household and Local Economies in Serbia Affected by Severe Floods in May and September 2014 - Phase II” funded by Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia.

Works in these households commenced in January 2017 and will be realised in phases. The beneficiaries were timely informed on necessary preparations so the construction works would continue smoothly.

European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides’s visit to Asylum Centre Krnjaca

The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides visited Serbia on 21 January 2017. Together with the Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Aleksandar Vulin and the EU Ambassador Davenport, the Commissioner visited the Asylum Centre Krnjaca in Belgrade, where 1101 refugees/asylum seekers/migrants are currently hosted.

New Year’s shows in Presevo and Bujanovac

Presevo – New Year’s show was organised on the 30thDecember 2016. During the whole month of December, children were rehearsing several choreographies, songs and reciting.  The show was held in Child Friendly Space and all the parents, cousins and friends were invited. The children were very happy, willing to participate and to show to their parents what they have learned. On the other hand, the parents were proud to see their children participating all together in this event.

Danish Refugee Council took part in the football tournament organised on 10 December by local NGO “Youth for Refugees” as a community activity aiming to promote inclusion of refugees from Presevo and Bujanovac Reception Centres. Teams from Elementary School Vuk Karadzic, Elementary School Ibrahim Kelmendi, Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, Reception Centre Presevo, along with two teams from Reception Centre Bujanovac, played in the tournament.

Opening of fully rehabilitated Medical Unit in Asylum Centre Krnjaca

The medical unit in Asylum Centre Krnjaca was reactivated on 8 December 2016, fully rehabilitated by DRC within the project "Support to Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Serbia", funded by UNHCR. The adequate medical equipment and furniture for rooms for examination, treatment and isolation have been provided in close cooperation with Primary Health Centre Palilula.

Opening of Child Friendly Space in Dimitrovgrad

Dimitrovgrad Reception Centre is a small recently opened camp in east Serbia, where some 70 refugees are housed. Although small, both in size and in numbers of beneficiaries – Dimitrovgrad camp is providing refuge for a surprisingly large number of children, around 50. Danish Refugee Council, funded by UNICEF has established Child-Friendly Space and is planning to establish Mother and Baby Corner in order to provide assistance to children and their caretakers.

Bujanovac Reception Centre opened its doors for refugees on 19 October 2016, while Danish Refugee Council established Child Friendly Space and Mother and Baby Corner, funded by UNICEF, within 24 hours. Bujanovac Reception Centre is a small camp in comparison to other camps in Serbia and rest of Europe - its capacity is only 250 beds, and it is considered as one of the family–friendly camps in Serbia.

The workshop ”Role of the social protection system – response to the current challenges in the field of migration“, held in Belgrade on 11 March 2016, was the first of two planned workshops with the aim to improve the capacity of local Centers for Social Welfare in providing adequate response to the increased influx of migrants. Due to the current migration related challenges, the capacities of all relevant stakeholders are in need of additional capacity building support.
